As the cold winter months sweep in, bringing freezing temperatures, icy conditions and lots of snow, it’s time to protect your home from potential damage. Here are tips to get your home winter-ready before it gets too cold to work outside.

Clean your gutters

Get rid of leaves, dirt and debris that could clog up your eaves, which could be damaged when temperatures dip below freezing. Rain and melting snow should drain properly so built-up water won’t cause household leaks. Check that your downspouts extend at least five feet away from the house.

Inspect your roof

While you’re cleaning out the eaves, look around to see if there are any damaged, loose, buckling or missing shingles on the roof. Grab the PacTool Roof Snake to make repairs such as replacing shingles and removing bent or rusted nails.

Turn off exterior taps and wrap your pipes

Be sure to drain water from outdoor pipes before it freezes and causes a pipe to burst. Disconnect your hose and store away so it won’t crack during frigid temperatures. You may want to insulate any pipes inside that are near exterior walls, so they don’t freeze.

Seal up leaks

To prevent heat loss, inspect your doors and windows for drafts, cracks and holes. General Tools infrared thermometers come in handy when checking different rooms in your house. Make sure everything’s properly sealed, and replace any brittle or broken caulk and weather-stripping. Use an exterior-grade caulk for best results.

Have your furnace, chimney and wood-burning fireplace professionally serviced

Routine maintenance checks at this time of year are important so these systems are running efficiently. Your chimney and vents should be inspected and cleaned before enjoying winter gatherings around the fire to prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide build-up which can then leak into your home.

Start planning your indoor home improvement projects

Winter is the perfect time to tackle renovations inside the house. If your kitchen or bathroom need a facelift, you can cut down on the amount of dust and mess by using the PacTool Snapper Shear to cut fiber cement.

Having the right tools for all your winter maintenance and home improvement jobs helps get the work done smoothly and safely.
