Hate the way cutting fiber cement backer boards makes such a huge mess, with airborne silica dust flying everywhere? Using a circular saw produces huge clouds of dust containing up to 30% crystalline silica content, which is a serious health hazard when inhaled, according to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
Fiberglass cement siding – a composite made with Portland cement, silica and wood fiber – is a popular material because it’s available in many styles, widths and textures. When it’s painted, it looks just like wood. Plus, it’s insect- and rot-resistant and basically fireproof. However, it can be very tricky to work with because it’s much harder and more brittle than wood.
